New Jersey and New York were hard hit by Hurricane Sandy. During TEDx Zwolle I gave a lecture about water in the city around the world. The sea and the rivers have shaped the identity and the country itself. Climate change increases the risk of flooding and drought. The effects of a disaster in a densely populated country like The Netherlands are incalculable. In 2012, the foundation of Castle Groeneveld awarded me the Groeneveld Prize for my contribution to the debate about nature and landscape in the Netherlands. In my essay ‘The value of nature’ I describe how our thinking about nature has changed from nature as wild and undisturbed to a kind a nature that mostly should be of service to us.
