In times of corona, the John Adams Institute is doing its utmost to bring the best and the brightest of American thinking to the Netherlands – online. On May 26th, the day that she was supposed to speak live at the John Adams, I interviewed Esther Safran Foer about her post-Holocaust memoire ‘I Want You to Know We’re Still Here’.
“Jo Vanweert knew two things when he decided to build his first home: It would be on the highest point in his small hometown of Bilzen, Belgium, where his family has lived for generations, and it would be designed by his cousin Jan Vanweert, an architect 11 years his senior. Jo told his cousin he wanted a house that had clean lines inspired by classic modernism and that took advantage of its hilltop site.

The John Adams Institute and De Balie joined forces to collaborate on an interview with the renowned American political scientist Francis Fukuyama about the geo-political consequences of the corona pandemic. The title was ‘In Government We Trust’: but do we?
Under corona lockdown, the entire cultural world has pivoted to producing online content. The first online event of the John Adams Institute was an interview I held with the American filmmaker Roger Ross Williams and the Dutch lawyer and judge Bart Stapert. Roger – who has spoken at the John Adams twice before – made the first three episodes of a new Netflix Originals series called ‘The Innocence Files’.
Kunstenares Diana Scherer werkt met de wortels van planten, van tarwe tot margrieten. Als een ware flora-dompteur laat ze de wortels groeien in patronen die zij heeft bepaald. Haar ‘doeken’ zijn van een onvermoede schoonheid die symbool staan voor enerzijds de strijd tussen mens en natuur, anderzijds het samensmelten ervan. Zij heeft nu een tentoonstelling in de expositieruimte van Hotel Droog.
