For the American magazine Dwell I wrote a piece about an intriguing house in Schoorl designed and built by its owners, the couple Ayla van Geest and Jordie Kuin, together with Ayla’s parents. By expanding an existing house they made space for three generations – and for their French bulldogs Bullie and Cooper! Ayla and Jordie furnished their well-designed expansion with lots of ‘pre-loved’ building materials.

De Amerikaanse fotograaf Wright Morris vertelde met zijn foto’s het verhaal van zijn land in crisistijd – zonder gezichten erbij. Geboren in 1910 in Lone Tree, Nebraska, de wide open spaces bleven aan hem trekken, ook toen hij allang in de grote stad woonde – want daar op het platteland lag voor hem het échte Amerika.

Eén op de vijf Nederlanders lijdt aan slapeloosheid. Voor haar project ‘Insomnia’ portretterde fotograaf Annabel Oosteweeghel zestien mensen in hun nachtelijke eenzaamheid, met het bed als een verstilde plaats delict.
De foto’s hangen op een tentoonstelling in De Fundatie in Zwolle; meer foto’s en ook interviews zijn te vinden in het prachtige boek ism Carlijn Vis en vormgever Sybren Kuiper.

One of this year’s memorable exhibitions was Fibra Architectures in the Pavillon de l’Arsenal in Paris. It was about architecture made of, yes, fiber: seagrass, bamboo, palm leaves, reeds, sugarcane leaves, banyan tree roots, straw, mycelium, wheat stalks, wicker, willow branches and the humblest of all – grass.

De grens tussen modefotografie en kunst is verdampt in het werk van Inez & Vinoodh. Met de computer hebben ze een heel nieuwe kijk op het lichaam ontwikkeld; hun werk vind je zowel in modetijdschriften als in musea. Hun expositie bij The Ravestijn Gallery ‘I See You in Everything’ wordt aangekondigd als een overzicht van de afgelopen dertig jaar, maar de nadruk ligt op het meest recente werk.
