Free time is becoming an ever more important factor in the shaping of our society, in the changing landscape, and in the physical and spatial arrangement of the Netherlands. Fun is ubiquitous and has a far-reaching effect on the development of the inner cities, the periphery and the countryside. My book Fun! Leisure and landscape examines, describes and analyses this phenomenon in text and photographs.

In the Netherlands, as in many other countries, urban and spatial planning often seem driven by good intentions, policy initiatives, and blueprints, and not by actual changes in the public’s way of life. When these kinds of ‘planning’ actually do come alive, when people find that something in their daily living environment has changed, they are not sure why. Seeking to shed some light on how spatial planning and daily life intersect, I worked with photographer Theo Baart and urban planner Tjerk Ruimschotel to create ‘ Atlas of Change’, a portrait of the perpetually changing Netherlands.
Terwijl de overheid zich aan het begin van het nieuwe millennium in de 5e Nota bezint op de ruimtelijke toekomst van Nederland, maakt deze Atlas een tour d’horizon langs de gedaanteverwisselingen die het land sinds de Wederopbouw heeft ondergaan – en nog steeds ondergaat. Fotograaf Theo Baart laat de plekken zien die we kennen uit begrippen in overheidsnota’s, zoals de ‘ganzengedoogzone’. Ik heb een aantal mensen geïnterviewd over hun relatie tot hun omgeving, en ik schrijf zelf over mijn forenzenritje van Amsterdam door het Groene Hart naar Rotterdam-Alexander. Nederland is, en wordt aldoor, herschikt.

Altijd was er de strijd tegen het water. Eeuwenlang legden de deltabewoners zich toe op het bedwingen van de elementen en het omzetten van natuur in cultuur. Intussen verlangen we in het dichtstbevolkte land van Europa wanhopig naar ruimte en groen – een verlangen dat zowaar wordt ingewilligd. Steeds meer landbouwgrond verandert in moderne wildernis, oftewel nieuwe natuur. ‘Natuurontwikkeling’ is het nieuwe wondermiddel: duinen en dijken worden doorgestoken, moerassen in ere hersteld, polders onder water gezet. Opnieuw legt de mens zijn wil op aan het land, maar laat juist nu de natuur de vrije loop.
Ik ging op reis om aan de hand van gesprekken met boeren, planologen, natuurbeschermers en landschapsarchitecten deze nieuwste omwenteling in de verhouding tussen de Nederlanders en hun landschap te onderzoeken. Met fotografie van Theo Baart.

The book ‘Snelweg. Highways in the Netherlands’ proves what the American landscape chronicler J.B. Jackson already knew: Roads no longer merely lead to places; they are places. With my words and with the images of Theo Baart and Cary Markerink this books presents the highway as a technological invention, a social setting and a biotope.
