Smart Cities: Big Data, Civic Hackers, and the Quest for a New Utopia

Our world is defined by urbanization and digital technology. As the smartphone becomes the platform for reinventing cities from the bottom up, we are witnessing the birth of a new civic movement, according to urbanist and technology expert Anthony Townsend. In his book ‘Smart Cities’ he investigates how entrepreneurs, mayors, and an emerging vanguard of civic hackers are shaping this new frontier. “That machines now run the world on our behalf is not just a technological revolution. It is a historic shift in how we build and manage cities.

Townsend is a senior scientist at New York University. Before that he was the research director at the Institute for the Future, an independent research group based in Silicon Valley.

Two Dutch experts have been invited to react to Anthony Townsend’s talk: Bas Boorsma, director at Cisco, and Frank Kresin, research director at Waag Society.

This event is part of the John Adams Institute Technology Series and is being held in collaboration with the new Amsterdam Institute for Advanced Metropolitan Solutions, founded by TU Delft, Wageningen UR, MIT and the city of Amsterdam.
