Toward the end of the last century, the Mauritshuis’ popularity grew rapidly and quarters became cramped, expansion was needed. The museum was able to rent space across the street at Plein 26, a brick Art Deco addition to a private club, but connecting the two builiding in the dense historic centre of the Hague, was not an easy slam dunk. Belgian architect Nick Ceulemans pushed the envelope in designing an apartment for a young man with a handicap. In no way shape or form does it refer to disability, yet it still conforms to the building code. The result: a cool, subtle and very convenient apartment where anyone would want to live. On the site of a former soap factory, the Savonnerie Heymans, the Brussels-based firm MDW has constructed 42 social housing apartments whole still retaining the industrial flavor.
