De zon schijnt voor iedereen: zonne-energie is de meest democratische soort energie die er maar bestaat. en je kunt het zelf opwekken overal waar je het nodig hebt. Ontwerper Marjan van Aubel heeft het tot haar missie gemaakt om te laten hoe we van solar technology over kunnen gaan naar solar design, bijvoorbeeld door de Solar Biennale die ze samen met mode-ontwerper Pauline van Dongen heeft geïnitieerd. What does it mean to be human in a time when man and machine merge? The exhibition Robot Love, curated by Ine Gevers, asks whether our capacity for love still distinguishes us from robots, now that robots – thanks to artificial intelligence – have the ability to learn. Can robots learn to love? Ine Gevers is also a guest in my talkshow Cinema Stadsleven in EYE Film Institute on Oct. 24th.

At the Designweek this year in Milan, Eindhoven’s Design Academy took us on a treasure hunt. They addressed big issues like fake news, basic income and value creation by going totally local, embedding their work at the liquor store, the market, the hardware shop, the newsstand.

The renowned Design Academy in Eindhoven opens its new academic year today with a fun, crazy, cool event on the theme of empathy. I’m moderating, guest speakers/artists are Merlijn Twaalfhoven, Frans de Waal, Roos Vonk, Lernert and Sander, Bas Raijmakers and Marianne Guldbrandson, and Rick Poynor. Niels van Eijk and Mirjam van der Lubbe were invited to do a complete makeover of Eindhoven’s concert hall. No stone went unturned, from the lobby with its touchy-feely ambient light wall to the uniforms, the carpet and that one brave yellow chair in the big auditorium. Graphics by Gerard Hadders.
