De parkeerprofessor en het ‘mobiele vagevuur’

Donald Shoup had als professor aan de Californische Universiteit UCLA het geluk, zei hij zelf, om zich te specialiseren in een onderwerp dat anderen te min vonden: het parkeren. Toch een onderwerp van belang in de US als car country, zou ik zeggen. Shoup heeft dat als eerste gezien en is een gepassioneerde vorser geworden naar ons parkeergedrag. Hij kreeg de bijnaam ‘the Isaac Newton of parking’ en zijn fans noemden zich ‘Shoupistas’. Deze week overleed hij op 86-jarige leeftijd. Ik sprak hem in 2006, toen ik een jaar aan Harvard zat als Loeb Fellow.

This fourth episode of Waterproof is all about breaking the Build-Neglect-Repair Cycle. As we have called it: Build. Neglect. Repair. Repeat. With the best intentions, countries from the global north often spend a bundle of money building something that people in developing countries need, or that the donor thinks they need. Then the locals can’t maintain it, or can’t afford to, or they don’t know how. It falls apart, and the donor either has to come back to repair it – or doesn’t come back at all. It’s a vicious circle.

Thuiskomen in De August, sociale woningbouw in Amsterdam-Noord

Architectenbureau Team V heeft voor woningbouwcorporatie Ymere een blok van 175 woningen in de sociale sector gebouwd in het snel groeiende Amsterdam-Noord. Ze hebben er alles aan gedaan om het gebouw gastvrij en waardig te maken: swingende assymetrische balkons, een voortuin met handgemaakte keramieke poufjes, zelfs mooi gecamoufleerde regenpijpen. Het goud is weg, nu opent De Nederlandsche Bank zich naar de samenleving

Vijf jaar heeft architectenbureau Mecanoo gewerkt aan de renovatie van De Nederlandsche Bank op het Frederiksplein in Amsterdam. De bank wil zich meer openstellen naar de stad en naar de samenleving. Nu het goud weg is worden de kluizen ‘De Nieuwe Schatkamer’ met tentoonstellingen. De lange brede binnenstraat is voor iedereen toegankelijk, net als de tuin waar vroeger de ronde toren stond. Mevrouw Meijer: een school is alledaags erfgoed

De stichting Mevrouw Meijer zet zich ervoor in oude schoolgebouwen niet te vervangen door nieuwbouw, maar te renoveren. Dat is beter voor het milieu, de leerlingen, én de samenleving. “Een school hoort geen wegwerpgebouw te zijn.” Haar nieuwste project, de Nimeto-school in Utrecht, is al overladen met prijzen.
