De stad in De Ochtend: Ontwerpen voor vluchtelingen

Elke woensdag ben ik tussen 10 en 11 uur te gast in het KRO NCRV radioprogramma De Ochtend op Radio 1 om actuele ontwikkelingen op het gebied van architectuur en stedelijk leven te bespreken. Vandaag: ontwerpwedstrijden voor vluchtelingen leveren veel ideeën op over tijdelijke huisvesting en diensten en producten om vluchtelingen ‘a home away from home’ te bieden.

International design congres What Design Can Do is holding a Refugee Challenge this year. The refugee crisis is asking for new and innovative ideas. An incredible amount of 631 submissions from 69 countries are now eligible for review & nomination. I’m in the selection committee that will take on the massive task of establishing a shortlist that finally will be judged by the international jury on 29 June. Read the article…

The Spoon Man

 For his entire adult life, the Brazilian engineer Alvaro Abreu smoked. By the time he was 46 he was smoking three packs a day. In 1995 he had a heart attack and his doctor said: no more cigarettes. Alvaro – nickname Zau Zau – heeded his advice, but was going crazy fidgeting, trying to find something to do with his hands.

Then he had an idea. He lives in the state of Espirito Santo in southeastern Brazil, north of Rio, where bamboo is plentiful. And he has always loved making things, so he had tools. With simple tools he made an equally simple utensil out of bamboo – a spoon.
