Again, a week full discoveries in Barcelona. I couldn’t believe I have never been to Hospital Sant Pau before, an amazing art nouveau building in the middle of the city. Also another ‘modernismo’ building opened up its doors to the public: Casa del Punxes which I can see from my apartment and now I got a chance to get a look inside. In Alella, a small town near Barcelona where we celebrated the grape harvest, we saw a glimpse of the huge impact of the upcoming referendum about Catalan Independence: Keep calm and speak Catalan!

House of the Witches’ Hats

I’ve been coming to Barcelona regularly now for about eight years. Our balcony looks out over Gaudi’s Pedrera (‘the ant hill’, we call it), the Sagrada Familia in the distance and in between a gingerbread castle-like building with six pointy towers that we dubbed ‘The House of the Witches’ Hats’. But only now have I seen it from the inside.

Elke dinsdag ben ik voor het nieuws van 11 uur te gast in het KRO NCRV programma De Ochtend op Radio 1 om actuele ontwikkelingen op het gebied van architectuur en stedelijk leven te bespreken. Vandaag bespreek ik de grootse renovatie van de Afsluitdijk, die met versterkingen, blauwe energie, kunst en een vismigratievijver klaargemaakt wordt voor de toekomst. Maar eerst hoog bezoek: Kofi Annan, oud-secretaris van de VN, bezoekt donderdag de Afsluitdijk.

TRACY•TV #21 – Ramblas Barcelona, Circl Pavillion, Zhao Renhui

Barcelona proves resilient after the terrorist attack on the Ramblas 2 weeks ago. There’s still much grief, but luckily life went also on. Still, impressive to see. I am not only eating delicious calamari here, but also working, on an interview with zoologist artist Zhao Renhui and my weekly radio column, this time on the Afsluitdijk. Also, I saw this week the brandnew Circl Pavillion of ABN Amro at the Zuidas in Amsterdam. Although…brandnew…? Everything is made from used materials, even jeans from the employees!
