Dwell: The Way We Build goes all the way on sustainability

“It is every architect’s dream to design and build their own home,” says Arjen Aarnoudse, founder together with his wife Farah Agarwal of the studio the Way We Build. And indeed they did, together with their two children, in the town of Driemond near Amsterdam. They went all the way with sustainability, building only in wood, with a geothermal heatpump and solar panels. “When we started, this way of working was very new,” says Farah. “Now it is the new normal.” Read my article for Dwell about their house below:

Landen grijpen Wereldexpo Dubai aan om zich te profileren

Toen in 1851 de eerste Wereldtentoonstelling werd gehouden, in het Crystal Palace in Londen, was dit een van de weinige manieren om uitvindingen met de wereld te delen. Maar nu, met internet? Wereldtentoonstellingen zijn vooral een marketingexercitie geworden. Wat laat je van jezelf zien, hoe vertel je je verhaal – en welk verhaal dan wel? Voor De Architect heb ik speciaal gelet op het Nederlandse paviljoen en dat van de Verenigde Arabische Emiraten, maar met deze vraag in het achterhoofd heb ik nog wat interessante voorbeelden verzameld op het uitgestrekte Expo-terrein:

Dwell: Tight Schip in Amsterdam

For the American magazine Dwell I wrote about an impressive project of 30 floating homes in the north of Amsterdam, called ‘Schoon Schip’. A group of like-minded and very motivated citizens spent a good ten years realizing their dream of a floating sustainable community. Schoon Schip is innovative in many ways – in the design and building process, in the choice of materials, in the energy supply and as a social experiment. “For most of us, this is the first home we’ve owned and the first house we built ourselves. Stadsleven x What Design Can Do: Clean energy for five world cities

  Stadsleven en internationaal platform What Design Can Do hebben de handen ineengeslagen en op 6 maart 2019 een live talkshow samengesteld over nieuwe ideeën voor schone energie in 5 wereldsteden op 5 continenten. WDCD had in samenwerking met de IKEA Foundation de Clean Energy Challenge uitgeschreven, waar meer dan 450 inzendingen op kwamen.
